Celebrating Black History Month

Every February, people participate in Black History Month events and festivities that honour the legacy of Black people in Canada and their communities. We gather to honour the roots that ground us, the rhythms that carry us, and the stories that shape us.

But why just this month? Is there a reason February was chosen?

We can and should look at the past, the heritage, and the future, every day of the year. But this month, February, does hold some significance. Read about it here: https://www.britannica.com/story/why-is-black-history-month-celebrated-in-february and some more here: https://www.wetech-alliance.com/2024/02/05/black-excellence-a-heritage-to-celebrate-a-future-to-build/

Without a doubt there is much history, much to learn and/or re-learn. Learning in education, in history and growing in understanding, it is what propels us forward. We re-live things all the time. The importance of experience helps build the future. We should all share in that dream of embracing culture and connection.

Please join CAYR as we present an afternoon rooted in Black heritage, resilience, and creativity, bringing community together through music, food, and spoken word. From rhythm and sound to story and nourishment, this gathering is about coming together, uplifting one another, and celebrating Black excellence in action.
