Empowering Black 2SLGBTQIA+ Youth in York Region: The Kuumba Program

At CAYR Community Connections, we remain deeply committed—now more than ever—to empowering members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community across York Region. One of the ways we are bringing this commitment to life is through Kuumba, a powerful new wellness program designed specifically for Black youth aged 16–29 who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+.

Launching in July 2025 and running until March 2026, Kuumba provides a safe, inclusive, and culturally relevant space where participants can thrive. Whether you’re looking for support, community, education, or just a place to connect with others who understand your experiences, Kuumba is here for you.

What You Can Expect:

Kuumba is built around a series of dynamic, trauma-informed workshops that support:

  • 🧠 Mental health & wellness
  • 🧬 Sexual health education
  • 🧭 Health system navigation
  • 🌱 Leadership development
  • 🤝 Peer connection in safe, affirming spaces

Perks for Participants:

Everyone who takes part in Kuumba will receive:

  • A Presto transit pass
  • Gift cards to support your participation
  • Light refreshments during in-person sessions

🗓️ Session Dates:

  • Week One (Virtual): July 23, 2025
  • Week Two (In-Person): July 30, 2025
The program continues in monthly cohorts through March 2026, so there’s always room to join!

We’re currently recruiting 20 participants for the next cohort—and we’d love to see you there. Whether you’re looking to build community, develop new skills, or feel more empowered in your healthcare journey, Kuumba is for you.
